On July, 23, 2007, Dr. Raymond F. von Dran, dean emeritus of the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University (SU), passed away at the age of 60. As dean of the School from 1995-2007, Dr. von Dran was highly regarded as a dedicated and compassionate educator whose vision catapulted SU’s School of Information Studies into national and international circles. Under Dr. von Dran’s leadership, the School experienced a remarkable period of growth: seven research centers and several academic programs were instituted within the School, and three of its library and information science (LIS)-related programs at both the Master’s and Ph.D. levels were ranked nationally by US News and World Report. Additionally, the number of students and faculty within the School increased exponentially, as did the School’s endowment fund.
Dr. von Dran also was a powerful driving force behind the Information Schools (“iSchool”) movement, which encompasses approximately twenty-one LIS programs and focuses on the relationship between information, people, and technology. Fittingly, Dr. von Dran advocated the mobilization of associated concepts of information and technology in order to better understand their uses and applications beyond the field of LIS.
During his tenure, Dr. von Dran authored numerous publications, and was chair of the education committee of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. He earned a Ph.D. in Information Science from the University of Wisconsin (Milwaukee) and Master’s degrees in History and in Library Science. Before joining SU, Dr. von Dran served as dean at the School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of North Texas.
